Hidimba Devi Temple, Manali

Hidimba Devi Temple

Hidimba Devi temple is located in Manali, a hill station in the state of Himachal Pradesh in north India. This temple is also known as Hidimbi Devi temple and locally it is known as Dhungiri temple. This temple is one of the most devoted temples in this region. Hidimbi Devi temple is dedicated to Hidimbi Devi(Wife of Bhima) and was built in 1553.

The Hibimba Devi temple

Story of Hidimba Devi temple

Hidimbi was supposed to have lived with her brother Hidimb, and not much is known about their parents. As Hidimbi was born in a Rakshas(Demon) family, She vowed to marry the one who would defeat her brother Hidimb, who was the strongest person in Manali.

Pandavas stayed in Himachal during their exile and Hidimb attacked them. In this fight among Pandavas and Hidimb, Bhima(The strongest among the five Pandavas) killed Hidimb. Thereafter, Hidimbi and Bhima got married and had a son Ghatotkacha(who later proved to be a great warrior in the Mahabharata war against Kauravas).

When Bhima and his brothers returned from exile, Hidimbi did not accompany him, but stayed back and did Tapasya to attain the status of a goddess.

The Diety Hidimbi Devi

People in Manali have great faith in Hidimbi Devi and at the time of Navratri people visit the Hidimba Devi temple in more numbers. In India during Navratri people across India worship goddess Durga, but the people in Manali worship Hidimbi Devi.

I myself have been to the Hidimbi Devi temple and enquired a bit about the Deity Hidimbi Devi. People explained that in Manali everyone worships Hidimbi Devi before the starting of any function or any important work. A big festival is also celebrated for worshiping Hidimbi Devi. Manali indeed is a very different and attractive place for everyone, especially for the people who love History and Travel.
